Around Beppu Kannawa Onsen
Beppu Jigoku Tour
In Beppu, areas where hot water, hot mud, and steam gush out are referred to as 'hells.' Exploring eight specific locations among them is known as 'Jigoku Meguri' or 'Jigoku Tour.' In Kannawa, there are six hells, including the cobalt blue 'Umi Jigoku' (Sea Hell). Most of these hells can be visited on foot from local inns and ryokans. Immerse yourself in the Earth's energy and experience it with your senses.
Kannawa Mushiyu
This hot spring, said to have been founded by the monk Ippen in the second year of Kenji (1276) during the Kamakura period, features a unique type of bath known as 'Mushiyu.' In this bath, a special method is employed – medicinal herbs called 'sekisho' are spread over the heated floor of the hot spring. People lie down on them, and the bath involves a distinctive 10-minute session of sweating. It's a unique bathing experience available just a short walk from local inns and ryokans.
There are discount tickets available. If you are interested, please inquire after checking in.
Hyotan Onsen
At Hyotan Onsen, you can enjoy a variety of hot springs, including steam baths, sand baths where you wear yukata, waterfall baths, and rock baths, all sourced from natural springs. There are also 14 types of private family baths, allowing families and couples to have a relaxing time together. It's a short walk of 2-3 minutes from the local inns and ryokans.
Yukemuri Observation Deck
The TV and photos introduced as Beppu Onsen are mostly taken from this observation deck. In 2012, 'Beppu's Yukemuri and Hot Spring Scenery' was selected as a 'Important Cultural Landscape' by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the night view from the observation deck was certified as a 'Japanese Night View Heritage' in 2010. The best time to see the steam is on clear, windless days in winter. Shinkiya is located near the center of the photos. It's a 5-minute drive from Shinkiya, and parking is available.
